EMPLOYMENT
Employed full-time as Project Engineer with Shirley Consulting
Engineers Pty Ltd, operating under the guidance of the Company
Director, Mr. Andrew F Shirley.
As project engineer, David is responsible for the general
management of various civil and geotechnical projects, from the
initial enquiry discussions, through to the site investigations,
detailed reporting or engineering design / construction.
In addition, David provides assistance to the company Director
in forensic and legal projects, is involved in business marketing
and policy development and takes an active role in the
supervision, management & training of junior SCE staff.
EXPERIENCE
David has managed a range of past and current projects,
including:
Civil & Geotechnical Engineering
Projects
- Major coastline hazard
management study of the bluff / cliff areas in the Wyong Shire.
Investigation and documentation of hazards related to cliff
recession & slope stability issues, including mapping of
headlands, analysis of recession mechanisms, advice on hazard
management strategies and production of ‘Hazard Maps’
for planning purposes.
- Geotechnical reports for
proposed subdivisions & building developments at Northwood,
Elanora Heights, Palm Beach, Hornsby Heights, Newport,
Queenscliff and Castle Hill. Work included various site
inspections, discussions with architects, engineers and builders
and provision of detailed geotechnical & construction
advice.
- Land stability training seminars
to Gosford City Council. Assistance in preparation and
presentation of a training program [lectures, workshop and field
excursion] intended to educate Gosford Council officers on risk
assessment methods and geotechnical reports.
- Risk assessment of cliff lines
& potential rock falls behind residential buildings at
Earlwood & Bellevue Hill and for a proposed residential cliff
excavation at Forestville.
- Site stability assessments and
the design & construction of stabilisation works for proposed
residential developments at Woy Woy and Palm Beach.
- Design & construction
recommendations for the development of a proposed access road and
recreational park, above a former municipal waste dump at
Thornleigh.
- Peer review & report on
proposed excavations and residential development at Avalon.
- Geotechnical advice and risk
assessment for a proposed rural fire station at Brooklyn.
Drilling investigation to determine the foundation conditions and
footing design issues.
- Subsurface investigation, design
& construction advice for a temporary basement excavation
support system [to 6 m] and high-rise commercial building at West
Gosford.
- Construction advice and regular
inspections during construction of a residential subdivision and
access driveway at Newport.
- Design, technical drawings and
construction advice for a residential access driveway &
retaining wall at North Rocks.
- Investigations, design &
engineering drawings of remedial works for a deteriorated soil
excavation behind a garage at Wahroonga.
- Drilling investigation,
geotechnical mapping & reporting on proposed basement
excavation and high-rise development at Collaroy.
- Inspection and initial advice on
the geotechnical & stability issues relating to proposed
excavations, on behalf of the owner of the adjacent heritage
structure at Alexandria.
Forensic Engineering Projects
- Investigations & reporting on
a suspected inadequate building foundation for a large scale
subdivision & residential development at Westleigh. The
project included drilling investigations and reporting on the
interpreted site geology and test data.
- Investigations, site meetings,
legal discussions and geotechnical advice in relation to a common
boundary retaining wall at Ambarvale.
- Investigations and reporting on a
suspected pavement failure and related damage to a segmental
paved access driveway on a residential site at Ashfield.
- Investigations & analysis of
the movements of a retaining wall at Glebe to advise on the
possible safety issues and available rectification works options
for the walls.
- Investigations, forensic analysis
& assistance in preparing expert witness report on the
causation of a landslide affecting two residential properties at
Lilli Pilli.
- Investigations & expert
witness reports on the likely causes of cracking and other damage
to two-storey residential buildings at Hurstville and
Newtown.
- Investigations, detailed
documentation review and assistance in preparing expert witness
report on the cracking / damage to a two-storey industrial
building at Homebush.
- Investigation and geotechnical
report on subsurface conditions & building damage, and
extensive advice on remedial works to semi-detached dwellings at
Redfern.
- Investigation & reporting on
the cracking and other damage to a residential house at Morisset,
claimed to be caused by mine subsidence.
