The provision of a slag granulation pit involving deep excavation within the mine processing complex at Mount Isa posed very severe restraints on site construction, particularly in light of the fractured nature of the bedrock material within which the pit was to be constructed.
Shirley Consulting Engineers were engaged to provide geotechnical advice on appropriate construction methodology and to then prepare the detailed design and documentation of the accepted system.
The final excavation support system comprised closely spaced bored piles, secured by tensioned bar anchors to reinforce and stabilise the rock / pile system.
